La Plata Market Area Demographics
Largely due to its proximity to Washington DC and the Town's desirable quality of life, La Plata
is transforming from a natural resources and manufacturing-based economy to a
suburbanized workforce centered in retail, service and the government employment.
Currently, the largest employers in the Town are Civista Medical Center, Facchina
Construction, and Southern Maryland Oil. Employment growth is expected in health
services; finance, insurance and real estate; government, and construction. A
recent market study indicates that the downtown can absorb 31,000 more square feet
in office and retail space. The Town has zoned a 150 acre parcel on the town's border
for commercial and industrial development.
